In today’s innovation-driven economy, employees require a different mix of skills than in the past. In addition to foundational skills like literacy and numeracy, there is increasing need for individuals to be adaptable, confident and possess competencies such as collaboration, creativity and problem-solving. To better prepare our students for the future, which is increasingly centred on solving unstructured problems and analysing information, PHS has developed our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) to support our students to develop the necessary “real-world” skills for life beyond school.

We have chosen to focus on a Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)-related ALP. The ALP carries our hope of inspiring our young on the beauty of discovering and creating things, and raising the aspiration of students to pursue STEM-related courses and careers to address challenges of the future that will improve lives.
- exposing students to the field of Forensic and Pharmaceutical Science
- engaging students in investigative science through creative problem solving,
- experiencing and applying the process of scientific inquiry,
- exploring scientific concepts through an authentic learning environment beyond the classroom.
- equipping staff with relevant knowledge and skill sets to implement the ALP effectively.
- establishing strong partnerships with external stakeholders in purposeful collaboration.
- First run in 2016 Sem 2
- 280 secondary 2 students have benefited from the ALP
The ALP consist of 2 tiers. A
tiered approach serves to provide different depths of experience in view of
students’ cognitive and affective levels of development.
- Tier 1 programmes seek to lay the foundation of scientific inquiry in students through activities that expose them to novel situations beyond the classroom.
- Tier 2 programmes have been designed to help students who have shown strong aptitude in science further develop their passions into strengths and achieve their fullest potential.
To achieve our mission, the curriculum
- adopts the active learning pedagogy, where learning takes place through hands-on and minds-on activities,
- challenges students to complete authentic and open-ended tasks in the area of Forensic and Pharmaceutical Science,
- is integrated across Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),
- is process-focused to enable deliberate teaching of scientific inquiry skills,
- is enriched with learning journeys, seminars, partnership programmes and competitions to broaden their experience and strengthen real-world connections.
At the end of the ALP, students should be able to
- demonstrate understanding and appreciation of forensic and pharmaceutical science,
- apply creative problem-solving and scientific inquiry skills to solve authentic problems presented through case studies,
- develop an interest in pursuing higher education in a STEM-related field.
Additional supporting documents may also be submitted together with the application form:
- Primary 5 Semester 1 & 2 and Primary 6 Semester 1 result slips and conduct grade, and CCA achievement records
- certificates of achievement/participation in STEM-related* programmes and/or competitions
- testimonial from primary school teachers
- any other relevant document(s) deemed useful to support the application, e.g. participation in Young Scientist Badge Scheme organised by the Science Centre, Questa, Robotics competitions, etc.
Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools’ academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.
General Ability Test (GAT) and Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) will not be included in our selection process.
