DIRECT SCHOOL ADMISSION (DSA) EXERCISE 2018 FOR GUZHENG ENSEMBLE AND SYMPHONIC BAND
The Guzheng Ensemble and Symphonic Band are well-established Performing Arts Groups in Presbyterian High School. Members demonstrate outstanding artistic accomplishments and have excelled at the Singapore Youth Festival Presentation.
The training programmes are carefully planned for optimal implementation to achieve the highest level of musicianship. The CCAs develop student leaders who live out the school values such as Integrity, Respect, Responsibility Resilience and Empathy. The school provides members with multiple opportunities to pursue their passion and contribute to the school and community through their creativity and artistic talents.
Students should have participated in the CCA applied for in their primary school and have a strong aesthetics background and interest in music.
Students should preferably possess certificates for practical skills from Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Trinity College or other recognised examining boards in a symphonic band instrument preferably woodwind, brass, percussion and string bass or guzheng.
Students should possess a positive attitude and a sense of commitment, as described by their primary school instructor and teachers.

Copies of the following documents are to be submitted together with the application form:
- Music certificates
for the highest level from accredited music boards.
Preferably for the instrument applied for.
- Primary 5 Semester
1 & 2 and Primary 6 Semester 1 result slips
- CCA and/or
- Other supporting
documents, e.g. Singapore Youth Festival certificate, music competition
certificate and testimonial from teachers/instructors, etc

Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools’ academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.
Short-listed candidates will be informed to attend an audition and interview at Presbyterian High School. At the audition, candidates’ level of proficiency will be assessed. They will perform a prepared piece of music or excerpts of it for no more than five minutes. Students will then be given a test on sight-reading.

Attendance is compulsory for applicants.
General Ability Test (GAT) and Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) will not be included in our selection process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Who can apply for DSA?
All Primary 6 students who meet the selection criteria.
2. How do I apply?
Application forms will be available from the School General Office and available for download from the PHS website. Submit the completed form together with the necessary documents by hand, or by post to Presbyterian High School before the application closing date.
3. When and how will I know the results of my application?
All applicants will be informed of the results of their application by post. See Timeline for details.
4. What is the frequency and duration of training?
Training is conducted usually twice a week for 3 hours. However, training hours will increase during competition or concert periods.
5. My child is not in a MOE school. What is the application procedure?
Any child not in MOE schools will require a letter issued by MOE HQ at the MOE Customer Service Centre. The letter contains a Registration Number, which he/she can use to apply for the DSA.
