Cultural Immersion Programme to Wuxi, Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai

On 7 November, 27 Secondary 2 students embarked on an eight-day Cultural Immersion Programme to Wuxi, Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai. The team was led by Vice-Principal Miss Sarah Yew; accompanied by Mr Steven Chan, Mrs Tan Woan Chyn and Mr Li Mingzhu

The delegation was warmly received by Principal Mr Huang Gaoxiang and his staff at Chang An Middle School in the Huishan District of Wuxi city in the Jiangsu province. The participants experienced learning in the classrooms and interacted with the students of the hosting school. They also had experiencee Wuxi folk culture through their visits to Qian Qiao Middle School Folk Culture Exhibition Centre, Huishan Old Town and clay painting demonstration in Nanchang Street. The students also had a glimpse of the daily lives of the elderly at Changning Community Hall; and toured the Wuxi Graphene Industry Development and Demonstration Zone.

In Nanjing, students were awed by the grandeur of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and the Yangtze River Bridge. The visits to the Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum also deepened the students’ understanding of the rich history of China.

In Suzhou, students visited Tiger Hill which is famous for its natural beauty as well as historical sites. They also visited the Fengqiao Scenic Area which contains the Maple Bridge that inspired the poet Zhang Ji to pen the famous Tang poem ‘Night Mooring at the Maple Bridge’. En route to Shanghai, the delegation visited the beautiful water river canal village, Zhouzhuang.

This Cultural Immersion Programme had given the students a first-hand experience of education in a typical Chinese school as well as immersing in the rich Chinese cultural traditions.

It had been a rewarding trip for PHS as it had paved the way for a partnership with Chang An Middle School. This partnership will enable students from both schools to develop a better understanding of each other cultures and educational learning; towards developing students to have a global mind-set
