Mathematics

The Mathematics Department aims to cultivate interest in and appreciation of Mathematics through teaching logical reasoning and thinking and developing students’ analytical skills. We teach our students skills and competencies that would make them better 21st century lifelong learners.

The Secondary One students participated in a mini-project where they could apply their learning of statistics to real-life situations. The Secondary Two classes undertook Problem-based Learning (PBL), a key strategy in the department which was implemented since 2007. PBL continues to challenge and instil in our students the objectives of integrated knowledge, collaborative teamwork skills and change-readiness, along with the important creative and critical thinking know-how towards lifelong learning. The PBL project uses the topic Measuration to challenge students to apply learning into physical designs. Our Secondary Three students learn Trigonometry in a fun way through using apps like Sketchpad, Clinometer and Compass to visualise 3-D figures and to apply the concept of bearings, angles of elevation and depression to find the height of the school’s Clock Tower, for example.

Competitions

Our students took part in various Mathematics competitions like the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad, the Australian Mathematics Competition, the All Singapore Secondary Mathematics Competition for Normal Course students, and the Zonal Mathematics Challenge at the Singapore Sports Hub organised by Outram Secondary School.

  • Our students who took part in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad brought home one Silver and 3 Honourable Mention awards.
  • One student was awarded a prize in the All Singapore Secondary Mathematics Competition for Normal Course Students.
  • In the Australian Mathematics Competition, our students obtained 8 distinctions and 67 credits.
