  PHS Teaching and Learning (T&L) Framework

The PHS T&L Framework draws from the key areas of performance in teaching explored in The Skillful Teacher and the dimensions of teaching and learning in the Singapore Teaching Practice. It describes clear expectations for learning as well as guides teaching practices to support effective learning. 

Learner-centered approach is the core of the PHS T&L Framework.  It takes into account the differences in learners and focuses on each learner’s interests, abilities, readiness and learning style to promote the highest level of motivation and achievement. It puts the responsibility for learning in the hands of the learners by imparting them with the knowledge and skills to carry out independent and lifelong learning. To this end, learning is facilitated through the use of appropriate teaching pedagogy, curriculum delivered and assessment tools.

Empowering learners

(cultivating positive belief and attitude)

·      build confidence in their belief of their own abilities e.g. by recognising and affirming each other’s effort, setting realistic targets and working towards them

·      identify and develop a growth mindset which embodies a passion for achieving excellence in mastery e.g. by adopting a positive attitude, reflecting on feedback and acting on it with purpose to extend one’s abilities.

Engaging learners

(making connections)

·      connect and relate to authentic experiences and create a meaningful shared learning outcome for themselves e.g. by exploring learning beyond the classroom and applying what they have learnt in real-life situations

·      develop a desire to learn and progress e.g. by taking ownership of their learning and cultivating good learning habits, and harnessing tools such as information and communications technology, for lifelong learning and continuous change.

Enabling learners

(knowing how to learn)

·      check for their understanding regularly and take action to close their learning gaps e.g. being clear with learning outcomes and reviewing them regularly, asking questions to clarify their doubts and deepen their understanding.

·      be proactive learners and create a positive learning environment e.g. by participating actively in class and school activities, co-creating a learning environment that is safe, respectful, inclusive, and supportive of learning.
