The PHS Volleyball CCA consists of both the school team and recreational team. All teams acquire in-depth knowledge of volleyball skills, rules and regulation of the game as well as skills required in the organisation of volleyball competitions. All these are taught to players by a team of dedicated coaches and teachers-in-charge who work hard all year round not just to impart knowledge and skills but imbue good character in players. The school team trains for at least three hours three times a week. The training schedule is packed with fitness training, skills based drills and tactical team play.
Armed with a common goal to pursue – the top four position in the National Schools Games, our school teams achieved the following results. In the North Zone Volleyball competition, our ‘B’ Division girls emerged as champions, our ‘B’ Division boys came in fourth and the ‘C’ Division girls clinched the third position. In the National Volleyball competition, our ‘B’ Division girls emerged as first runner-up.
Besides the National School Games, our school team players participated in competitions organised by the Volleyball Association of Singapore and friendly competitions with the Singapore American School and Queensland School, Australia. Our school also organised the PHS volleyball competitions that involved 16 schools. This competition allowed both the school teams and recreational teams to learn to organise and run volleyball competitions in addition to improving their performance through competitive play.
In June, a few of our student leaders attended a volleyball camp organised by St Hilda’s Secondary School to learn from international coaches from the USA, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Thereafter, they shared their knowledge with our players. In October, a number of our players were involved in a Service Learning Voluntary Work entitled Stepping out for Stroke patients in partnership with the National Stroke Association.
In December, three school teams took part in the V-Rex Volleyball competition held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia in preparation for the National Schools Games that will commence early January 2018. The PHS volleyball CCA calendar is filled with many activities to help players achieve their optimal performance.
